ENERGY TIPS FOR YOUR HEATING HABITS
Welcome to the second instalment of our ‘ways to save’ series. This week we’re looking at your heating. After the great weather we’ve had during lockdown, the weather has taken a turn of unpredictability (classic British weather). With that in mind here are a few tips and tricks to help you save £££ on your heating bills as you start to look to put the heating back on.
1. Try installing thermal or heavy curtains during the colder months. This helps trap the heat in the room. Also, try closing them at dusk so heat doesn’t escape through the windows.
2. If your home has high ceilings think about placing a shelf just above the radiator to help deflect the heat into the centre of the room rather than it drifting straight up to the ceiling.
3. By adding a draught excluder to your home you could save up to £35 a year by stopping all the draughts in your house. [1]
4. Get wall and or loft insulation installed in your home. Cavity wall insulation could save you around £160 a year [2] and loft installation could save around £140. [3]
5. If your home doesn’t have it maybe invest in double glazing so heat doesn’t escape through your windows.
6. Try turning your heating down by 1 or 2 degrees. This could save you £££ over the year.
7. Use your central heating timer (not the thermostat) to turn your heating on and off. Setting times will help regulate heat and cost.
8. Keep your radiators clear. For example, don’t put a sofa in front of your radiator, because it will absorb a lot of the heat and the room will take longer to heat up costing you more money.
9. If your radiators are fixed to an outside wall, try installing reflective radiator panels behind them to reflect the heat back into the room.
10. If you have TRV’s (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) installed try turning them down/off in rooms that are less used.
